[DD1] The Snake and the Stone

"Little Courser, where is your knight?"

Kelpie froze, braced across all four hooves and staring, wide-eyed, at what... they thought had been a wall. A solid stone wall. With eyes. Eyes and a nose and a mouth curved into so kindly a smile it was almost lazy. On unsteady feet they backed down two steps, away from the looming face. 

"Excuse me?" their voice came out more of a squeak than actual words. 

"Your knight," the great face repeated, and the movements of its mouth caused the pyramid beneath Kelpie's hooves to tremple. Already wrapped tight about their tail, their serpentine companion constricted in panic. "Have you lost them?"

"I'm sorry, sir, I don't know what you mean--" Kelpie backed off another several steps, until their hooves settled upon level ground. The great pyramid crunched and groaned, and seemed to lean forward. The better to stare down at one frantic Courser. 

"You cannot have come here alone?" 

"Yes, sir," Kelpie choked. "Y-yes I did..."
