[DD1] A Misstep

Yálie anxiously stepped back from the crushed mushroom, eyeing the scolding pixies with a rolling eye. It was his first time entering the dungeon on his own; so of course within the first few steps he had managed to get himself into trouble. The tiny pixies swarmed his face, still swearing, and he wheeled backwards even further with a grunt. "I'm sorry!" He cried, tossing his mane in an attempt to scatter the little creatures. The last thing he needed was one of them to place some kind of pixie curse on him! He had heard stories of coursers cursed with all kinds of strange ailments - even ones that had gone mysteriously missing, only to turn up months later far from home, after stepping into a pixie circle.

"I'll help you find a new mushroom, if it will help. Just give me a chance." The pixies stalled their swarming at his request, and he was relieved to see the leader of the little family wave off the group. They were strange creatures, to be sure - no taller than the height of one of his ears, two-legged and winged, with odd leaf-colored skin and hairless, flat faces. His dam had warned him as a foal about the tricks pixies would play on those that unwittingly stepped into their circles.

The tiny pixie waved a fist at him before pointing at the crushed mushroom, chattering harshly in its unintelligible language, and Yálie bowed his head to take a closer look at it. Thankfully, he had not crushed any inhabitants in his misstep (at least, as far as he could tell), and only smashed one of the delicate fungi. "Your home is beautiful. I do sincerely apologize." He told the pixie, and then straightened to survey the cavern he had found himself in.

The stone floor was carpeted in different-colored mushrooms, some lit with blue pixie-fire while others seemed empty; he nodded to the pixie before taking careful steps toward a patch of the empty fungi. The mushrooms in the dungeon were much larger than those on the surface, he found, and most were a dull brown or light cream color. From his dam's teachings, he knew to avoid the more vibrantly-colored ones, having no wish to poison himself in the effort to redeem himself, and he quickly located a large, cream mushroom that seemed to suit his purpose. With careful lips he pulled the delicate fungi from the ground, making sure not to crush or tear the soft cap.

He quickly - but carefully! - returned to the pixie, who had been waiting for him at the crushed mushroom. He eyed the crushed mushroom gazebo before gently placing the new fruit onto the ground next to it. "I can't shape the gazebo myself, but I hope that this will serve." He said, and watched as the pixie flitted down to the new mushroom. The pixie waved a tiny hand and the fungus immediately rooted into the ground next to the old one; when the pixie pointed, he bent to pick up the crushed mushroom and move it out of the way. He discarded the crushed fungus into what seemed to be a pile of dried, dead mushrooms, following the indication of the pixie.

The rest of the pixie family quickly swarmed the new mushroom, and it seemed only a moment passed and the mushroom had been shaped into a charming, tiny gazebo. The chief pixie fluttered back up to Yálie's face, chattering, and he snorted nervously. They had much more magic than he thought! But, thankfully, the pixie seemed fairly appeased. After a moment, they vanished into the new gazebo, leaving him to survey the rest of the cavern anxiously. There were so many pixie houses in the mushrooms!

Resolved not to continue down this path, lest he cause more damage with his unwieldy hooves, he gave the pixies in the mushroom a deep bow before stepping carefully back to the cavern entrance. He would seek a new entrance tomorrow - hopefully one without pixies!
