[DD1] Silk and Sludge

The stages in which a caterpillar becomes a moth is one that Vexation only had a slight understanding of. He wasn't exactly that fond of bugs, but he had been forced to listen to the particulars of their development every now and again due to it being important for his survival.

Although all of the creatures were stuck within their cocoons, it was obvious that some were farther along in their development than others. If he wanted to bring one of them up to the surface, he would have to pick of those that were the least likely to emerge, and therefor the least likely to fight back.

He wandered the field of cocoons, carefully stepping past those that held fully formed moths. His eyes scanned the area until they spotted a small patch hanging from the ceiling. From the looks of it, most of the cocoons in this section were in the stage that Vex uncouthly called the 'sludge stage'.

They weren't caterpillars, but they weren't moths either- they were useless collections of disintegrated bug that would eventually be reconstructed into the shape of a moth. The perfect amount of vulnerability to be an easy mark. And even better for Vex, all of the disgusting sludge was contained well enough that he didn't have to touch it.

Despite Vex's usual rough actions, he was actually quite careful and gentle as he picked a cocoon and lowered it towards the ground. It barely made a noise as it touched the stone floor. Some of the cocoons hanging from the ceiling shook, but none of them dared to crack open.

He kept his head low, pulling the cocoon across the ground as carefully as possible to both avoid knocking into any of the other bug-holding silks, and to avoid breaking the fragile cocoon on the ground with the friction.

Vex wasn't thinking about just how much he could get from this. Depending on if it hatched or not, and if the moth that arose could be tamed, the number could range drastically. But before he could think about any of that, he had to get the cocoon out of the dungeon intact first.

Easier said than done, sure. But Vex wasn't a quitter.

You enter a room in the Caverns full of massive, dangling pillars of silk. Upon further inspection, they are cocoons; in the light, you can see various giant caterpillars and moths in various stages of transformation. These vulnerable creatures could be valuable, but you’re not sure what dangers they may pose if disturbed. What do you do?
