[DD2] Hellish hounds
He had barely made it through the mouth before the heat hit him. It was like a scorching wall of just pure heat that Söl had never before felt. He kept pushing forward, even if his initial reaction was to take a step backwards. He couldn’t go back, he knew it. Even if the mouth kept itself open the doors before him had closed again and again. The simple way out was to keep going deeper. Söl had to let his eyes adjust to the light. Everything down here was either bright or hot. There was no in between and in fact most things were both bright and hot. He kept his ears pinned back. It helped, even by a tiny amount.
Having never been this low before he kept his pace slow and his eyes moving around to catch anything out of the ordinary. It was however simpler said than done. Everything was new for him. He kept close to the wall. Even the wall was warm and seemed to shine in the glow of everything else.
Söl, the Bay dun, carefully moved onwards. He couldn’t really stop, if he did it felt like his hooves would melt into the ground. And when in doubt it was better to move forwards.
Söl could understand what the toad meant now. It was hard to keep his head right when the heat was pressing so closely onto him It was trying to tear him down. To make him fall. Make him a victim of the warmth. He would keep moving forward to avoid it.
As he was walking, carefully, down a small natural forming bridge he heard the first yaps and yips of what he could only assume was a monster. He quickly made his way over the small bridge when the hot air around him suddenly got pierced by the barking of hellhounds. He knew he had to hurry.
He moved quickly close to the wall to avoid falling down the crevice into what seemed like a thick sea of lava.
The barking grew louder, but he kept moving. The distance was nothing for him. The heat on the other hand. He shook himself. He was already sweating. He hadn’t had the chance to adjust to the heat before he had to run.
The barking grabbed his attention. Hellhounds. He saw them now. He had heard about them before but he had never before seen them. And now he saw them running by his side on the opposite side of the cavern. They were far apart, but Söl knew that wouldn’t last.
He looked around himself. There had to be a quick getaway. There was no way he got all the way here to get taken down by hellhounds. His eyes looked around until they got stuck on a small exit. It was big enough for him. It had to be an exit. The only problem would be that it was big enough for the hellhounds as well. He checked the cavern. Was there a way for the hellhounds to pass over. He didn’t think there was. It didn’t look like any other natural bridges passed above it. He had to gamble.
