Rattler would have never let it be said that she enjoyed the company of others; she highly preferred the term 'team opportunist'. These horses had banded together out of necessity and convenience, not because they liked each other. It wasn't exactly true, though.. not after she'd begun slowly lowering her walls. It was strange, finding herself appreciating or liking someone else. Most coursers were unbearably boring and horribly annoying, loud and clumsy and downright stupid.
Somehow, Rattler had managed to find a party that was beyond that.
The other coursers she was running with respected her, mostly, and more than once Pandora had dived in to take a hit for the heraldic mare. Working as a unit was a strange phenomenon for Rattler - she'd never really worked in groups before hooking onto Moritz. They had been the one to introduce her to Pandora, the neurotic puck that now charged into each and every room like there was nothing to fear. Rattler found herself respecting that. Fearless was good, and loyalty was even better. Rattler was used to facing down challenges alone, but she found herself emboldened by Pandora's borderline insane bravery. The puck was the most fearless diver Rattler had ever seen, and she had this knack for finding things the others in the group missed.
Moritz was an occasional tag-along, as popular as they tended to be. There were a number of coursers with the popularity of Moritz, experienced dungeoneers with a lot of eyes on them. Rattler had endless gratitude for Moritz and all the things they'd taught her thus far. Truly, she'd be nowhere without them. Did they always get along? Absolutely not. More than once they'd gotten into disagreements about the way Rattler handled certain things, and that was fine. Rattler knew she was right, and maybe delusional, but so far she'd been able to thwart more than a few bad experiences. That track record spoke for itself.
Rattler's purpose? Truly, she wasn't sure what a 'purpose' really was. Everyone seemed to fit into some position, all but herself. She had days where she wanted to be up front with Pandora, charging into unknown areas with complete comfort and confidence - guided by the need to Discover, to Learn. But there were days where she hung back with Moritz and Karma, listening to the pair of them quietly debate or discuss whatever funky items they'd discovered. Rattler never said much, but she missed very little. She guessed that if it came down to it, she would be considered the brawn of the operation. Bigger than all the others, Rattler had been known to face down adversaries with minimal fear and no plan. So far, it was very effective. She'd snatched a harpy right out of the air by a leg when it'd gone swooping for Karma and her treasure bag, the motion entirely reactive. Since then, it'd been more or less her job to 'deal' with disagreeable dungeon creatures.
Maybe that was what she was best for - but she found she didn't care for further thinking when Karma smacked her neck with her tail, urging the four of them deeper into the dungeon. Somewhere ahead, Pan's braying laugh burst through the caverns followed by a disgruntled shout that must have come from Moritz.
The odds of surviving the dungeon are greater in numbers. Every Courser has their role in a party: what’s yours? Or do you prefer to work alone without dividing your spoils?
